"description": "Satoshi Aizawa’s “Grey Path” incorporates NumPy, a library in Python, as an homage to Fortran, the programming language symbolic of Hiroshi Kawano’s era. The work uses data from the artist’s Path series, with pixel-level transformations on a black-and-white canvas that are controlled precisely by an algorithm. This is the first time that the algorithm has been revealed to the public. Though the initial prototype was developed a decade ago, ongoing experimentation, discoveries, and breakthroughs have led to a final piece that has significantly evolved from its origins. While the prototype tended to follow a purely destructive progression, converging in a single direction, this new work holds both destructive and constructive elements in balance, creating a nuanced and dynamic interaction that embodies a “grey” quality. While the work is composed entirely of black-and-white elements, the intricate details create a visual effect that, when viewed from a distance, gives the impression of grey, which prompted the work’s title.\nEach of the artworks in the collection features a distinctive visual characteristic — odd-numbered works appear concave, while even-numbered works appear convex. The size of each generated object directly determines the resolution of the artwork, with no cropping or added margins. To display the work accurately, it must be viewed at 100% of its original resolution. Scaling up or down will distort the intended effect, although enlargements at natural number multiples (e.g. 2x, 3x, 10x) are acceptable. The fact that the work may not be displayed correctly on social media platforms presents a unique challenge, highlighting a form of beauty that is easily overlooked in today’s social networking society.\n川野洋の遺志を継ぎ、その時代を象徴するプログラミング言語Fortranへのオマージュとして、効率的な多次元配列計算のために設計されたPythonのライブラリNumPyが用いられています。 ,

"description": "Saeko Ehara’s Synergistic Metropolis is the product of an algorithm powered by Stable Diffusion (AI) and TouchDesigner, a node-based visual coding software. From image generation to animation calculations, every aspect of the process is fully automated by the computer. In this way, the project builds on Hiroshi Kawano’s explorations of computational simulation by emphasizing an AI-centered workflow. Just as Kawano’s Artificial Mondrian (1967) revealed the influence of Piet Mondrian, so this work also channels the latter’s Broadway Boogie Woogie (1942-43), which captures the vibrancy of New York City. However, in contrast, Ehara has fed images of Japanese nocturnal landscapes into the machine, adding generative animations to produce a unique rhythm through the fusion of inorganic AI generation and human creative intervention, blending stillness with motion.\nWhile much of the simulation in this work is delegated to the computer, the process of building the system and selecting the final outputs still depends on human judgment. The work therefore reflects the paradox of digital art as both heavily reliant on mechanical procedure and human intention and choice. Even creations born of machines carry within them the semblance of life.\n「Synergistic Metropolis」は、Stable Diffusion(AI)とノードベースのビジュアルコーディングソフトウェアであるTouchDesignerによって駆動されるアルゴリズムから生まれました。 ,

"description": "mole^3 speculates that it was through Piet Mondrian’s art that Hiroshi Kawano, living in post-war Japan, may have sought to sublimate the negative emotions caused by the war through the pursuit of beauty. Her work, Changes, Cycles, and Shapes in Between, analyzes the process by which Mondrian arrived at his ultimate forms through an approach whereby shapes and colors evolved organically. In painting, “shape” has an axis of < figurative ↔ abstract > and an axis of < noise ↔ linear >, while “color” also has an axis of < noise ↔ linear >. Using a “component diagram of painting” (see below) as reference, mole^3 developed a means of cycling through multiple visual idioms at once, with the work expressing the cycle itself. In this way, Changes, Cycles, and Shapes in Between evokes a shifting state of digital materiality — a literal pattern of flow that oscillates between figuration and abstraction. By further incorporating textures printed using a baren, she has encoded her identity as a printmaker in natively digital form.\nmole^3は、戦後日本に生きた川野洋が、ピート・モンドリアンの芸術を通じて、戦争によって引き起こされた負の感情を美の追求によって昇華しようとしたのではないかと推測しています。 ,

"description": "Misaki Nakano’s Nostalgia consists of pixelated noise crafted by the artist herself, with each pixel’s color calculated precisely and output using WebGL technology. While the individual pixels are extremely small and may seem insignificant at first glance, the artist places great emphasis on the pixel-level perspective during the coding process, and this meticulous attention to detail is reflected throughout the project. By rendering each pixel independently, unexpected visuals emerge that evoke natural environments. The cuts define a color scheme inspired by natural skyscapes that evoke a sense of nostalgia, injecting the series with both visual depth and emotional resonance.\n「Nostalgia」は、アーティスト自身が作り上げたノイズをピクセル化したもので、各ピクセルの色は精密に計算され、WebGL技術を用いて出力されています。 ,

"description": "Inspired by Hiroshi Kawano’s Red Tree (1972), Okazz’s Resonant Echo explores visual order and rhythm through its grid of simple geometrical shapes. With its palette limited to the color primaries of red, yellow, and blue, the work stresses the movement of shapes as well as the influence of Mondrian on Kawano. Motion here is consistently linear, with lines forming orderly patterns at right angles, evolving continually through smooth animation. In With you, patterns derived from the Markov chains and Monte Carlo methods used by Hiroshi Kawano are combined with organic, contorted circles that the artist finds aesthetically pleasing. Kawano’s concept of “man-machine teamwork” introduced a collaborative process whereby a programmer handled the ideation phase, the computer managed the design phase, and the production group carried out the final creation. With you revives the emergent potential of “man-machine teamwork” with computer and human interdependent.\nSenbakuは、ジェネラティブアートの探求を通じて、自然が無数の創造的なインスピレーションとランダム性の源であることを発見しました。 ,

"description": "Shunsuke Takawo regards geometrical motifs as well-suited to reflecting daily life and expressing his inner world through programming. For many years, he has explored static elements such as color, shape, harmony, shadow, density, layering, and texture, while his explorations of composition are rooted in his mother’s quilting. His work, Flows of Pattern, is influenced by Hiroshi Kawano’s vision of social transformation through aesthetics as well as his 1969 work, Simulated Color Mosaic.\nLike a haiku, tanka, or short melody, Takawo generates individual images filled with potential through concise code. While these codes are structured systematically, they are often daily records that he later organizes and shares publicly. His coding process is spontaneous and physical, involving writing, interacting with an output, and then adding and connecting further code. His dialogue with the computer is subtle, fleeting, and highly volatile. Takawo dreams of writing code as if he were speaking Japanese, imagining a future where fragments of his own code remain part of human history, like stone monuments or ancient tablets. He wishes to leave behind his works as well as the self transformed through the writing process.\n髙尾俊介は、幾何学的なモチーフが日常を模写し、プログラミングを通じて心象を表現するのに適していると考えています。 ,

"description": "For Kaoru Tanaka, “sound is always intertwined with our lives, coloring different moments.” Her work Path of Tones begins with a collection of different sounds whose trajectories reflect the movements of everyday activities. By recording these moments as memories, the project expresses how an accumulation of trivial sounds and events ultimately shapes the form of the world. It is inspired by Hiroshi Kawano’s system of image generation known as the “K-system.”\n「音は常に私たちの生活と絡み合い、さまざまな瞬間を彩っている」。 ,

"description": "For Kazuhiro Tanimoto, past, present, and future are joined in an expansive ocean of digital information. Blockchain technology preserves this vast sea of code where fragments of an artist’s ideas are embedded within algorithms. Hiroshi Kawano rejected the notion of subjugating computers in order to produce images envisioned by humans, asserting that the essence of computer art lies in the computer’s autonomous capacity to generate beauty. Tanimoto’s Sea of Code is inspired by Kawano’s philosophy. Born of an algorithm that generates colors without relying on a human-selected palette, it generates melodies using data extracted from classical music and Markov chains. Harnessing a level of computational power that wasn’t available to Kawano, Tanimoto’s algorithms invite dynamic and complex beauty to emerge from simple forms.\n過去、現在、未来は広大なデジタル情報の海で繋がっています。 ,

"description": "Inspired by Hiroshi Kawano’s assertion that “computer art should be the work of a computer artist, not a human,” ykxotkx has designed an algorithm that generates a painting independently of his own intention. In previous works, the artist has meticulously designed algorithms to realize an envisioned outcome, thereby stressing the human’s creative agency. However, for the exhibition Patterns of Flow, he placed emphasis on the computer’s creative autonomy instead.\nIn Flow Painting, the artist divided the program into two parts according to Kawano’s framework, comprising a control system (the “necessary conditions”) and a material component (“sufficient conditions”). The work’s composition is determined by a simple control algorithm that uses random numbers, recursive subdivision, and noise-based coordinate transformation. When drawing the objects based on this composition, the artist then applied his own selected color palette and textures to generate a painterly output that reflects his own personality and aesthetic sensibilities.\n「コンピュータアートは人間に代わるコンピュータ芸術家の作品であるべき」という川野洋の主張にインスパイアされ、ykxotkxは、自身の意図とは独立して絵画を生成するアルゴリズムを設計しました。 ,

"summary": "Patterns of Flow celebrates the work of a new generation of Japanese artists working with code. Channeling the experimental aesthetics of computer art pioneer Hiroshi Kawano and continuing the global conversation started by curator and writer Jasia Reichardt in the 1960s, this exhibition explores the power of generative systems to capture a world in flux. Led by Shunsuke Takawo, who inspires the Processing community in Japan with daily coding, Patterns of Flow is a collaboration with Right Click Save and Massage Magazine, hosted on Feral File and at NEORT++ in downtown Tokyo.",
