The site

An exhibition is a show Feral File produced with a curator and one or more artists, opened on a date. Each artist's work in it is a series: one artwork issued as a set number of editions, or a set of unique works. An edition is one token from a series, held by one collector. Every exhibition, series and edition has its own page.

Work Feral File keeps for an initiative that no longer operates, such as a2p, the artist-to-peer exchange Feral File grew out of, and the Aorist releases. Feral File did not produce it. It keeps the pages, the files and the provenance reachable, and lists each release with the exhibitions under its own date.

Yes. Every page has a Markdown twin at the same address plus .md, every exhibition, series and edition has a DP-1 playlist at the same address plus /playlist.json, and https://feralfile.com/llms.txt lists the machine surfaces. A DP-1 playlist plays on an Art Computer, in the Feral File app, and in any DP-1 player.

Collecting

Collecting a Feral File artwork grants you a specific set of property rights to your artwork as well as access to the artwork files themselves. You can explore these rights in Feral File Artist + Collector Rights. Collecting a work also gives you access to its original, high-quality files and source code (in the case of software-based works), which you can download, display, and even loan to others.

The files of every work are stored on IPFS, addressed by their content, and the identifier is written in the token's metadata. Feral File keeps its own archive node with an off-site backup. The Archive page lists the verified copies by identifier, and anyone can pin them.

You don't need an account. Open the Feral File app and add the wallet that holds the edition under Mine. The work appears in your collection and plays on an Art Computer from there.

Payment

Collectors do not receive any advantage or priority whether they use credit cards or cryptocurrency for payment.

We process credit card payments through Stripe in the United States under Feral File Inc. Your card statement may show “FERAL FILE INC” (or a Stripe-formatted variant). Depending on your bank, you may be asked to verify online purchases before authorization. If prompted, please confirm the transaction is from Feral File Inc.

Sales

Most series sell at a fixed price for a set time, every edition at the same price, from the series page. Some single works sell by highest-bid auction: bids are public and cannot be withdrawn, and a bid in the final minutes extends the close. The terms of each sale are on its series page.

Some series set editions aside from the sale: AE, the artist's own edition, and PP, the publisher's proof, Feral File's copy. They are numbered with the rest of the series.

They stay on their series and exhibition pages. Once a sale has ended, the series page offers Inquire instead of Collect, and the inquiry reaches Feral File.

Join Feral File

Feral File artists are selected for each exhibition by that show’s curator. We don’t currently have a way for artists to upload work directly to Feral File or to be considered for selection by curators.
