Widely recognized as one half of the electronic music group Mouse on Mars, he has also pursued a solo career creating sound works under his own name as well as Lithops, Noisemashinetapes, and Neuter River. Starting in the mid-1990s as part of Cologne’s A-Musik collective, St. Werner has released a steady stream of records both as a solo artist and with Mouse on Mars. He has collaborated with Oval’s Markus Popp as Microstoria and contributes music for installations and films by visual artist Rosa Barba. During the 2000s, Werner acted as the artistic director for STEIM, the Dutch Studio for Electro-Instrumental Music. In 2013, St. Werner released Blaze Colour Burn, the first of a series of experimental recordings called the Fiepblatter Catalogue on Thrill Jockey Records. St. Werner has realized sound interventions and installations in art spaces such as the ICA London, documenta Athens and Kassel, Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, HKW Berlin, Lenbachhaus Munich, and Ural Biennial a.o. St. Werner was a visiting professor at MIT’s Program in Art, Culture and Technology (ACT) in 2016 & 2017, served as professor for dynamic acoustic research (DAF) at the Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg between 2017 and 2021 and was a visiting professor for sound and performance at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich 2020 and 2021."

"description": "“‘Vectoria’ starts with a rhythmic snap made with a custom-made patch I use a lot in Reaktor, a programming sound environment similar to Max/MSP—basically a modular synthesizer in software. The patch can create rhythms based on feedback chains, which suddenly open and release moments of sound and then close down again. It was an odd grid that, surprisingly, was able to produce overlapping polyrhythms if you keep tweaking the feedback input carefully. What excited me was that I could produce ever-new, unexpected rhythmic variations. Once I had the form and the harmonic and melodic personality down, I started cutting things in, rearranging, adding counteracting moments, and playing tricks with them. ‘Vectoria’ is a kind of glowing opening scene to the whole Polyarrythmia narration.” — Jan St. Werner",

"description": "“I think of ‘Seizures Palace’ as an opera track. It has all these symphonic, harmonic moments, but they are all rendered. I didn’t sample an orchestra or any existing music, it just so happened that its spectral richness and certain harmonic changes within it made it sound very orchestral. I wanted there to be drama and for it to really build up and be rumbling and romantic. I was surprised that all of that was possible just by working with computer-generated sound.” — Jan St. Werner",

"description": "“‘Glissbob’ is a “pop-y” song. It’s a track I made when lockdown went heavy. I sent it to Justin Vernon [of Bon Iver] one night because I thought it would resonate, and he sent it back the next morning with his voice on the track. Kyle Resnick added trumpet, and it had some processed samples from C+C Music Factory. Naeem [formerly known as Spank Rock] put down vocals and wrote lyrics. But in the end, nobody was really sure about what to do with the result. I later listened to it without the samples, without Justin, without Naeem, without Kyle, and I thought that it was probably the most consistent version after all. So I mixed it with Andi [Toma] without these additions, and that’s now the version on Polyarrythmia.” — Jan St. Werner",

"description": "“‘Model Illusion’ is an immediately accessible track because it’s rhythmically and harmonically quite obvious. I sent very resonant sounds through what is basically a midi rhythmatizer. The whole arrangement and structure is built on these resonant movements. It’s a lavish and worked-out piece with internal otoacoustic micro-movements, and it has a Gershwin-esque twist to it. ” — Jan St. Werner",

"description": "“‘Acrylic Interval’ is rhythmically the most intriguing piece on Polyarrythmia. It’s based on a session I did with NuPG [the New Pulsar Generator], a software synthesizer invented by Marcin Pietruszewski. I chopped up the most interesting moments and added other sounds, mostly made with Reaktor and Razor, a software created by Erik Wiegand a.k.a Errorsmith, plus tools from Dietrich Pank and Mike Daliot. These are the software I use for almost everything. I wanted to do a rhythmic stream, something that drummers could play along with. It doesn’t have a strict metronomic clock, but it implies one. It starts with this staccato kind of thing, and then it goes off beat and fully disperses, then builds up again. It even has a kind of implicit grand finale.” — Jan St. Werner",

Andi Toma, my colleague from Mouse on Mars, suggested that it could have been a track on our ‘Iaora Tahiti’ release from 1995. So it’s one of those examples of,even if you were deprived of all your instruments and gear and given completely new tools, you’ll likely come up with the same-sounding material again. The rhythms are based on feedback chains, which at times can create quite steady rhythms. How far you can lean off that steadiness is the reminiscence to a dub song to me.” — Jan St. Werner",

"description": "“‘Contrafictionary’ reminds me of a Microstoria [Jan’s former band with Markus Popp] track from the 1990s that sounded deliberately non hi-fi and was all about leaving certain frequencies out, shifting harmonic and rhythmic content in contradicting directions. ‘Contrafictionary’ is somehow mysterious; it doesn’t reveal itself and has all these unexpected and idiosyncratic transitions.” — Jan St. Werner",

"description": "“In German, ‘Aufgezeichnete Luft’ means “recorded air.” But if you change one letter to ausgezeichnete, it means “remarkable” or “splendid”—“splendid air.” This piece is made with one particular software patch made in Reaktor. It was a lucky moment of that patch producing this amorphous spectral movement, and I would just follow along and make sure it didn’t collapse. I filtered it and shaped it, bringing strings of frequencies in and out, always keeping the momentum. Then I took the recording and chopped it down to its present length.” — Jan St. Werner",

"description": "“‘Kubo Final’ was always meant to be the last track. I think it’s one of the best sounding pieces in the collection. When you hear it through a good audio system, it’s rich, wide, and open. It’s a condensed and rather short track, very much based on one melodic and harmonic statement.” — Jan St. Werner",

"summary": "With this solo exhibition of electronic musician Jan St. Werner, the idea is to put audio at the forefront, positioning it at the same level as visual work within the framework of digital art. The nine compositions that make up Polyarrythmia—which can be taken as a set of sound works, a performance, an exhibition, an album—are being released as NFTs through Feral File, available both as individual compositions and a full set. Here’s St. Werner on Polyarrythmia, in his own words:",
