"description": "Mon Alphabet en Signes (2024) is a series of AI-generated texts describing small wooden tiles taken from a French abecedarium toy. Each of the 26 tiles contains a word with a pictogram, resembling illustrations of the Saussurean “signifier” and “signified.” Images of the tiles are interpreted by computer-vision software designed to detect and describe the semantic content of images in natural language. The software may succeed or fail to do so on multiple levels, as revealed by the generated text, which points to the capabilities, shortcomings, and biases of technologies purporting to detect and produce semantic meaning.",

"description": "reCAPTCHA.otf is a font derived from ink-on-paper drawings of reCAPTCHA texts. These distorted word forms were excerpted from scans of printed material that Google's machine readers had been unable to transcribe. Humans transcribing the reCAPTCHA texts were not only verifying their humanity via their English literacy in order to gain access to the website, but also freely helping Google transcribe previously undigitized text and improve its machine-reading capabilities. With the present acceleration of large language models, machines require increasingly massive volumes of quality text input for training purposes; they still depend on human labor to help them learn, and the parameters around what they will be fed are unclear. What machines seem to have the most trouble understanding—and inversely, what humans depend on to read efficiently—is context. With reCAPTCHA.otf, the source reCAPTCHAs have been cropped to include the smeared and wavering letters next to the character you are typing, producing new reCAPTCHAs where characters bleed into one another. Each of the 26 editions includes a different cluster of characters.",

"description": "In modern business, the cloud computing processes that manage business logic—for example, the sequence of bank transactions and shipment logistics necessary to fulfill an online order—are so intertwined that a single failure can cascade and stop business in an entire geographic region. If not resolved within seconds or minutes, a system \"downtime\" event can cost an enterprise millions of dollars.\nDowntime is a program comprising eight \"worker\" samples that initially keep time with a metronomic grid. Each worker has the power to digress from its schedule and pull the others with it, their aggregate disobedience skewing the grid. The chart interface that watches the system crashing, recovering, and crashing again is inspired by observability dashboards used to monitor the reliability and performance of business systems.\nThe Feral File versions single out individual workers. Each performs a single routine that charts a position somewhere between being available and unavailable for work.\n\"Downtime\" also connotes rest, or relief from the chorus that demands worker availability, access, and attention.",

"description": "This macOS/Windows executable arises from the artist's continual research into the development and implications of computational perceptual systems. The work's structure, in which a composite image is created by overlapping a pair of animals and objects in varying opacities, draws from a technique used by researchers to trick computers into thinking they were seeing a completely novel, unseen image. The categories and images themselves follow the methodology of ImageNet, a public database of images widely used in image recognition. As described by curator Melanie Bühler in a text for Mousse Magazine, “The creations are stunning in their bluntness; crudely merging two pictures is apparently all it takes to trick a computer into thinking it’s seeing something it has never seen before. These images, and the catalog that specifies and quantifies their amalgamation, possess a rare quality: they are haunting and fundamentally stupid, weirdly specific and completely detached.” In a past exhibition, the work has been shown as floating, apparition-like sequences of impossible figures projected in two loops onto scrims of sheer fabric in a dark, labyrinthine space.",

Each review is a “prose pocket world,” lyrical and written in second person, like a tour through an imagined landscape. In Perfume Area: The Alphabet (2024), twenty six special reviews were delicately handpicked as a fragrance grammar and discovery set. Each perfume review, A–Z, is time-sensitive, changing according to the viewer’s local time, and fully blooming in prose for a handful of hours every day.",

"description": "Human Abecedary (2024) is a generative alphabet that takes the standard pool of Latin letters and systematically abstracts them by cutting them up and swapping their parts around. This process reorients familiar components, namely recognizable letters, and mutates them indefinitely to appear “foreign,” solely by rearranging them. The work calls to mind fictional languages and asemic writing systems that have no national identity—an algorithmic way to estrange the alphabet from itself. The series made for Feral File focuses on an expanding, cumulative pool of letters, beginning with permutations between the first two letters (A and B) and ending with the entire alphabet. Each edition iterates through twenty-four cycles, generating hundreds of mutated, semi-legible hybrid glyphs.",

"description": "Glossolalia, or speaking in tongues, is the practice of producing speech-like sounds that are thought by some to be a divine form of proto-language.\nMaterially, In Tongues (2024) comprises an endless stream of randomly concatenated n-grams extracted from Proust’s Swann’s Way. Groups of letters cascade down the screen in fits and starts. Flowing at speeds often too fast to comprehend, it becomes a fog. The particular form taken—that of language streaming down a screen, faster than one could type—calls to mind the chat interfaces that have become our primary mode of interaction with language models.\nZucconi’s recent work has dealt with populations of images and their proximity to language, using tactics as simple as cropping and re-sequencing. Similarly, n-grams—a contiguous sequence of N items from a given sample of text—become literal crops of language. By knitting them together, the work facilitates a kind of simultaneous reading of the source text.",
