"description": "“Planet Hibiscus is a planet that feels old, but is more advanced than ours or any other planet in the universe. With the help of MidJourney, I imagined being sent as a photographer to document the coronation and wedding of Hibiscus’ new monarch and her partner. I imagined shooting the experience on a medium-format film camera.\nIn ‘Planet Hibiscus,’ we see kids gathering wool and ribbons from the lake to receive the royal couple. We get a peek at the event crew holding rehearsals with dancers and entertainers. We meet the chefs responsible for the event’s delights. We watch the queen arriving in her royal carriage. "description": "“I remember my childhood home in Quartier Escale. The checkered staircase led to a corridor flanked by walls featuring oil paintings of Scrooge McDuck and other old-school Disney characters (or my grandfather’s best attempts at painting them). The outdoor cinema to the right, which he passionately managed, mostly showed Hindi movies and Westerns. The sweet smell of warm brioche wafted up and into the house through the balcony from the bakery on the ground floor. The bakery was once a grocery store, Chez Jo, where I spent many days as a toddler greeting my grandmother’s customers, while my parents attended school in a different town.\nMovie posters, plastered ads for sweet condensed milk, branded sacs of flour and onions and potatoes, cases of soda and beer in green glass bottles, camembert and brie wrapped in glossy paper, jars of pickled olives and chili and carrots — a symphony of colors now muted by a faltering memory.\nFine art didn’t find its way to my hometown. We didn’t have museums or galleries. We didn’t have stewards of the finer things in life to tell us what beauty meant and what was worth contemplating. We had our own stuff, heaps of everyday life stuff, full of history and a distinct visual language that I contemplated in awe as a child.\nIn the digital memory of the world, as evidenced by AI, my hometown is a blur, my people are distortions, and our perspective on art doesn’t matter. “Chez Jo” is a brute-force attempt at remembrance, coercing Midjourney to conjure up a sense of place and time it does not know well, using references it barely understands.\n‘Chez Jo’ is a series of 61 works created in a procedural way with Midjourney and p5js. Through a traditional collage technique and stubbornness, my grandmother’s grocery store comes to life, imperfect and elusive, much like my memory of it.” — Linda Dounia",

"description": "“It’s 2063 and I hear on the radio, “What you know about that Condense Riddim!”\nMusic starts to play.\n“Summer Edition 2023!!!! We outside and we feeling nice.”\nI rush to my closet and pull out a bent box of LPs. Brushing off a layer of dust I searched through, finding Jampuff Riddim, Tamarind Riddim…. I pull out a green vinyl with Condense Riddim written on the front.\nThe music on the radio intensifies and I close my eyes, finding myself in the middle of Broad Street. Pink hair, pink clothes, pink shoes to match, my friends and I walking down the street like it’s ours. Our hair bouncing with the beats, the sun illuminating our skin. That day we got a good deal from the man selling the newly released LPs on the street. “Tamarind juice! Peanut punch! Bottle water! If you get a vinyl you get a juice for free, if you get a juice you get a smile from me.”\n“Summer Edition” was created to capture a time in history. It captures the same kind of excitement and memories that a dusty box of LPs in the corner of our aunts’ and uncles’ Caribbean home captures. I wanted to celebrate and showcase the beauty and visual expression that Caribbean street fashion has. By collaborating with AI, I pushed the limitations of AI’s understanding of “Caribbean style” and “Caribbean women” to create a range of women from different ethnicities, found in the Caribbean, and different styles of how they might dress, with an emphasis on color blocking.\nTamarind, Condense, and Jam puff riddim are releases of different dancehall riddims for this “Summer Edition” record.” — Zoe Osborne",

"description": "“‘Proof of Spirit — Act II’ is the second installment of my longitudinal art exploration on the concept of Àshe via the Proof of Spirit series, which was first unveiled at La Biennale di Venezia 2022. Àshe is characterized by intuitively drawn, fluid lines that flow in and out of each other, forming a nexus of distinct patterns, discernible beings, hidden motifs, and embedded symbols. The style borrows its name and philosophy from the Yoruba concept of Àshe, which represents the life energy that animates all that exists, and that connects us all as one.\nI began the series by creating 1,024 handmade Àshe drawings on paper, which were scanned and then used as the dataset for training a machine learning algorithm. This was done to investigate a number of different questions, principally whether or not the machine could be imbued with the “spiritual intelligence” of Àshe and then create work in my likeness. A selection of the initial results of the training were then exhibited at The Ghana Pavilion of La Biennale, via an installation of a robotic arm, which drew the machine learning interpretations of Àshe live, every single day during the course of the exhibition.\n‘Proof of Spirit — Act II’ also features a curated set of the first results of the ML training, and will be the first time people can actually digitally collect work from the Àshe series, which began in 2014. It serves as a significant milestone for the ongoing project, as it makes its way into the cryptoverse. And as Àshe keeps evolving as a visual language and body of work investigating the concepts of change and oneness, expect it to continue its metamorphosis as it absorbs, reconstitutes, and reimagines all that flows through it.” — Afroscope",
