"description": "“Generic Mannequin Gets Flayed” is a corporate term for “image-free” digital representations of bodies that are examined for risks and anomalies during airport body scans. Zach Blas worked with this non-image in his installation “SANCTUM” (2018), a security-detention-center-meets-sex-dungeon environment that probes the dynamics of power, exposure, and desire inherent in surveillance and predictive policing through the lens of BDSM. Rendered silent and pliant through biometric capture, we see the mannequin bound, whipped, contained, and harvested for use in the creation of new weapons and sex toys. By invoking queer aesthetics and consensual power play, Blas leaves the question of complicity up for debate — are the mannequins prisoners, sex slaves, worshippers, or experimental test subjects? The work’s ambiguity problematizes our symbiotic relationship with technology, examining the nature of personal agency, surveillance, and control in a world shaped by data mining and social engineering.",

"description": "“Lizard King at Spa Day on the Neon Isles” comes to us by way of Zach Blas’ multimedia installation “The Doors” (2019), which explores psychedelia, drug use, and artificial intelligence. Looking closely at Silicon Valley’s connection to Californian counterculture, the work brings together a constellation of references, including Aldous Huxley’s writings on mescaline and LSD and the 1960s rock band The Doors, fronted by Jim Morrison (nicknamed “the Lizard King”). Spoken word poetry generated by artificial intelligence neural networks — trained on corporate nootropics literature and Morrison’s writing and voice — is recited by a CGI lizard modeled on the prehistoric Barbaturex morrisoni (named after Morrison). The work alludes to Silicon Valley’s transhumanist desires to hack and perfect body and mind. In contrast to a “turn on, tune in, drop out” ethos, taking nootropics and microdosing LSD have gained popularity as “smart drugs” designed to unlock the mind to labor harder and faster.",

"description": "“20-Sided Elf” depicts an automated prediction session from Zach Blas’ Icosahedron, an AI crystal ball that houses an immortal elf soothsayer. While tech elite toy with predicting the world’s future, Icosahedron plays with their worldview of the future. Blas modeled Icosahedron after the 20-sided die inside a Magic 8-Ball, a popular American fortune-telling toy designed to offer ten affirmative responses, five non-committal, and five negative. Similarly structured, the elf that lives inside the crystal ball of Icosahedron is trained via machine learning techniques on 20 writings influential to Silicon Valley’s approach to predicting the future, including texts by historian Yuval Noah Harari and Ayn Rand, as well as works of fiction such as The Lord of the Rings and Lord of the Flies. The outcome is an AI elf futurist created by accentuating the often overlooked condition that Silicon Valley’s predictive technologies are bound to material constraints and limitations, as well as ideologies and fantasies of the future.",

"description": "In the Genetically Modified Gods series, Dr. Pinar Yoldas reimagines genetically engineered superhuman life forms as deities based on the gods and goddesses of Anatolian mythology. In a future where the Olympic Games are no longer staged between nation states but multinational corporations, athletes are bioengineered for athletic prowess and excellence. Artemis, who in antiquity was a huntress and protector of wildlife, is a biotech project of Nike, designed to compete in a spectrum of sports from archery to aquatics. In “Genetically Modified Gods: Artemis,” she, like her brothers and sisters, is born out of our cultural obsession with performance and excellence. However, she frees herself from her corporate overlords and returns to her ancient origins as a warrior who fights against ecocide.",

Genetic manipulation techniques allow scientists to create organisms with desired qualities and conduct research on a vast range of topics, from obesity to cancer, brain development to longevity. Delicately, modification of the human genome is protected by a nexus of international regulations. It is a sensitive topic in bioethics. With “Designer Baby,” Pinar Yoldas imagines a future where “designer babies” become the norm, and having a genetically perfect child blessed with superior intelligence, strength, or beauty becomes the ultimate luxury good and status symbol.",

"description": "Surrealism was an art movement that probed the subconscious, dreams, fantasies, and desires via an exquisite visual vocabulary. As an homage to female surrealists such as Remedios Varo and Leonora Carrington, Pinar Yoldas’ “Hollow Ocean” creates a painterly space for reflecting on the future of life. Life evolved in the ocean, and almost all life begins its journey in liquid environments. There exists a possible future where all ocean life is gone (actually, according to science, there’s a deadline for that and it is 2048). The piece stands between hollow structures of death and fluid structures of life: embryos, amniotic fluid, saltwater, and the primordial ooze.",

"description": "“If you reap what you sow, who soughs what you reap?” “Post-Pangea” critically engages with the politics of biocapitalism as it pertains to the food industry and how ideas of nanotechnology, synthetic biology, and genetic engineering have infected the imaginary of agriculture and food production. Nanotechnology involves the manipulation of materials and the creation of structures and systems that exist at the scale of atoms and molecules. Researchers embed infinitesimally small nanoscale biosensors and particles in plants to detect pathogens, pesticides, heavy metals, and other contaminants in food, water, and soil. We are told that this technological intervention is vital to ensure food security in a world ravaged by climate change. Yet existing research indicates that nanoparticles have a greater risk of toxicity than larger particles and the multi-generational impact of nanotoxicology is still poorly understood. With “Post-Pangea,” *particle group* asks us to consider who stands to profit from these innovations and to shed light on the lack of regulation of nanoparticles.",

"description": "Fusing microscopic imagery, rock music, and *particle group*’s signature poetic incantations, which draw on concrete poetry and the aesthetic strategies of visual/textual interplay, “Tin y Pluri” has the feel of a music video. Indeed, it was originally designed to be exhibited on the iPod nano, a product that came out in the mid-2000s, when the idea of “nanotech” was synonymous with the future. Tin refers to the Tijuana Institute of Nanotechnology, a speculative space for nano-scale research and art production inaugurated in 2012. As artists engaged with scientific research, *particle group* question science’s narrative “engines of creation” and the aestheticized practices and “naturalized” conceptualisms inherent in research, investigation, discovery, and data transfer within scientific communities’ articulations of self. By recombining the rational and the impulsive, *particle group*’s media interventions invite us to question what we know about the synthetic material world we are surrounded by — what we buy, use, live in, and consume.",

"description": "This nanopoem was co-created by Amy Sara Carroll and Ricardo Dominguez of *particle group,* along with Maribel Montero (a nanolithography specialist). It was produced with a Raith50 E-beam Writer on silicon coupons at nano3 (UCSD). The writing field of the coupons was between 0.5 um (nanometers) to 5.0 um (for the sake of comparison, recall that a white blood cell is 7,000 nanometers in width). Two trajectories were at play in developing these nanolithographs — the work focuses on the year 2012, the year that the Mayan Calendar ended/shifted. Representations of that time-change oscillated between the apocalyptic and the utopic, paralleling representations of “nanocausts and nanotopias” tracked by the artists in their work. The year 2012 also marked the inauguration of the Tijuana Institute of Nanotechology (TIN), a speculative space for nano-scale research and art production where these signs first were “taken for wonders.”",

UKI is the sequel to Cheang’s iconic cyberpunk porn film I.K.U. Discarded on the toxic waste dump E-trashville, Reiko encounters Les Mutants, creatures who have evolved over generations of e-trash remixing, toxic pollution, and viral infection. Les Mutants help Reiko reboot themself back to existence and transform into the virus UKI, capable of infiltrating and sabotaging Genom Corp’s BioNet. In “LES MUTANTS, #1,” we see Reiko meeting the mutants’ Mother Yeast, a body of ever expanding blobs, appearing like lumps of dough rising in all directions, and VARIUS, a black and white photograph of a 1900s boy whose face and body are pockmarked from smallpox infection.",
