"description": "Under the larger project, Becoming Illegible, which engages with both social media face filters and facial recognition, Sarah Friend’s “Mirror Studies #1” is an interactive browser-based facefilter. Placing the facefilter form in dialogue with idealized ecological imagery, this work translates the questions of how we become legible to machine learning into the arena of how a landscape becomes legible to society. These images of landscapes and faces blend together — at times familiar and recognizable, at others alien, Cthulhu-like, and abstract.",

"description": "Jakob Kudsk Steensen’s “Frozen Fern Genitalia, 52°03'08.7\"N 13°52'34.4\"E” shows part of a 3D scanned frozen fern, as well as the coordinates at which it was scanned. The piece was created with photogrammetry using 1200 images taken by the artist in the snow over the course of two days. The result is a photo-scan made with a human body, which moved around the plant during the winter of 2021 in Spreewald, an area south of Berlin. The work focuses on the reproductive organs of the plant, contrasted with its digital format and the physical process of creating the image. It results in an ultra form of slow media, where several weeks were spent creating a single image, contrasting the speedy behaviors we more often see in digital space today. It also insists on worlds beyond the virtual, by relying entirely on organic material encountered across swamps surrounding Berlin.",

By prompting the model with unusual sentence constructions mixing Earthly ecology with sci-fi alien plots, strange interplanetary juxtapositions are generated.",

"description": "Kalen Iwamoto’s “Littor[alter]ms” is at once a conceptual poem and a teaser for a forthcoming crypto-literary experiment. As a conceptual poem, it illustrates the (e)merging worlds of literature, NFTs, and crypto literature in a literal/literary translation of the ecotone. As a teaser, it unveils the main features and the underlying thrust of an upcoming experimental crypto-literary work whose seed was planted in a particularly fertile, ecotonal moment. The line of poetry in iambic pentameter set in relief at the meeting point of Shakespearean theater and NFTs reveals the crux of the experiment and our deep-seated ambivalence vis-à-vis a relationship that is both wholesome and transgressive.",

"description": "“element/tr33/obj (AV-2022-U-274)” is the immaterial derivation of a physical bronze sculpture shown at Brownstone Foundation, Paris, in July 2022. The original physical bronze sculpture, “element/tr33 (AV-2022-U-259),” explores potential forms taken by hemp plants. Thousands of hemp herbariums were collected on the web or created by the author, then digitized. From there, “anti-Darwinian” branch and impossible leaf forms were generated by GANs (generative adversarial networks) and modeled in 3D. The 3D model was then reproduced as an “IRL mock-up” using fragments of branches collected by the artist at the Château du Feÿ, during the Glitch Residency in 2021, while the leaves were 3D printed. The mock-up was then cast in bronze, forming the “element/tr33 (AV-2022-U-259)” sculpture. Lastly, it was digitized by photogrammetry and voxelized, becoming “element/tr33/obj (AV-2022-U-274).” The owner of this digital sculpture is authorized by aurèce vettier to install it in any metaverse, if possible in spaces totally open to the public.",

The art piece unites these different types of forms into a new transmediated Form of Forms (hence Formaform) that functions as a poetic map allowing access to a second-order process. This map acts as a metaphysical bridge between a digital and a moist medium, remapping how thought and action become the vessel for observational reflectivity. “Diagrammatic Formaform V” paradoxically becomes a diagrammatic translation-motion of all possible and impossible cybernetic flows of information between an observer and the map itself.",

"description": "Kopfschlag is a collective and anonymous internet-based project created in 2007 by Primavera De Filippi and Wolfgang Natlacen. Online visitors may participate by drawing, writing, erasing, and sharing their artworks on Kopfschlag’s virtual wall, which can be defined as something between an Etch A Sketch and exquisite corpse. Snapshots of this constantly evolving artwork have been saved as independent video clips that memorialize some of the most interesting sections of the broader artwork. “Ants over the City” is one of these snapshots — neatly illustrating the power of decentralized collaboration, as many anonymous participants have contributed to create an epic scene with no other tools of coordination than a mutating virtual canvas on their screen.",

All moving parts of the 3D model were subsequently articulated in order to replicate the movements of a real human body, and the avatar was then “taught” to juggle with the masks of the Beijing opera. In this work, ORLAN plays her own role.",
