"description": "Sophie Kahn’s work has long explored technology’s failure to capture the human body. For her series The Divers, she uses a 3D laser scanner that is ill-equipped to capture motion, so when she scans a moving and breathing person the device breaks down, generating layers of overlapping fragments. During a residency at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn, New York, Kahn 3D scanned Butoh dancers and performance artists Azumi Oe and Sindy Butz during a live performance. In this model, “The Divers V,” which the artist has used in multiple artworks, two women share a quiet embrace, their gesture tender but ambiguous. The scan has been animated so the various overlapping sweeps fade in and out of translucency, revealing the architecture of the scan along with its fragmentation, and destabilizing the makeup of the image.\nFor this exhibition, the artist is presenting seven works using this model: a 3D animation, five small 3D printed sculptures, and one 3D printed bas relief. The video, small fragmented sculptures, and larger relief sculpture all give one perspective on the central data which makes up the model — the file is rendered or materialized from multiple angles and in multiple media, but ultimately remains invisible and inaccessible to the viewer’s gaze.\nCredits:\nPerformers: Sindy Butz and Azumi Oe\nHoudini animation assistance by Adam Rokhsar\nShapeways Collection: First collectors of this work will receive a corresponding 3D print from Shapeways. Within two weeks of the sale closing, Feral File will contact collectors to input their name, email address, and shipping information to provide to Shapeways for fulfillment. Shipping and printing costs are included in the price of the work. Note that all orders will take 6-8 weeks to deliver. After initial collection, NFTs can continue to be collected on the secondary market without the 3D printed component.\nThere are five different 3D printed fragments for this work, each an edition of 20. Fragments will be randomly assigned, but if a collector buys multiples you will not get repeated fragments. The fragments are printed in Grey MJF Plastic PA12 at the average size of 18cm x 14cm x 8cm."

"description": "Amber starts as resin oozing from trees which, under the right conditions, becomes fossilized through a natural hardening process called polymerization. In pieces of amber, which can be hundreds of millions of years old, humans have found such treasures as extinct plant species found nowhere else, and the oldest evidence we have of sexual reproduction in flowering plants.\nIn “Human-Era Flora in Amber,” Rodell Warner questions how long information about us, preserved in our polymerized 3D prints — whether transmitted by the content or the medium of our outputs — will be available after our deaths. Could the 3D printed doppelganger of this digital artwork turn up 100 million years from now, carrying a message?\nShapeways Collection: First collectors of this work will receive a corresponding 3D print from Shapeways. "description": "The acronym PFP refers to “picture for proof” or “profile picture.” PFP NFTs emerged as a ubiquitous format from projects like CryptoPunks where thousands of digital avatars are randomly generated as unique 1/1 NFTs. Famous New Media Artist Jeremy Bailey is a living digital avatar, but unlike PFPs, his identity is fixed and unique. How might we all benefit from this emerging asset class that relies on variation without diluting Bailey’s famously consistent identity? The solution is simple, by dividing himself into 100 unique slices or ‘coins’ many more collectors can own a unique share of his total self. Each coin will be available as a real physical coin referencing a cross section of Famous New Media Artist Jeremy Bailey’s head. Every collector will also get access to a digital augmented reality (AR) model of his complete head for their reference and enjoyment.\nShapeways Collection: First collectors of this work will receive a corresponding 3D print from Shapeways. Within two weeks of the sale closing, Feral File will contact collectors to input their name, email address, and shipping information to provide to Shapeways for fulfillment. Shipping and printing costs are included in the price of the work. Note that all orders will take 6-8 weeks to deliver. After initial collection, NFTs can continue to be collected on the secondary market without the 3D printed component.\nThe 100 unique slices will be distributed from the neck upwards with the low editions receiving parts of the neck and the holder of edition 100 receiving the top slice of the head. The slices are printed in wax and then cast in bronze with a natural finish. The size will vary per slice with a maximum of approximately 5.5cm x 8cm, but the thickness is 1mm for all of them."

"description": "Matthew Plummer-Fernández’s “Metamultimouse” is a digital and physical figurine that is both one and many at the same time, embodying the paradox of distributed ownership for hybrid digital-physical artworks. In digital form, the work exists as an animation made with CGI and AI software, morphing between various computer-generated patinas. In physical form, each copy manifests as one of its possible versions. “Metamultimouse” continues the artist’s inquiry into changing attitudes towards copyright, especially in relation to 3D printing, often using derivatives of Mickey Mouse to exacerbate copyright conundrums. In this latest installment, a smoothed-out version of Mickey rendered free from copyright now has to grapple with NFT culture, where popular characters are expected to be both unique and discernibly similar, often using code to create variants and randomize their distribution.\nShapeways Collection: First collectors of this work will receive a corresponding 3D print from Shapeways. "description": "Rujunko Pugh (Syberweerd)’s “Capital Persuasion” is a digital, 3D coin inscribed with a black-Asian code. This code is part of an ongoing project that the artist developed to explore the semiotic space in which meanings shift between signifiers and to examine mechanisms that disrupt western-centered ideas of race.\nUnique characters in the black-Asian code were created and assigned to the 26 letters in the modern English alphabet. Each character was generated by combining iconographic segments of black hair curls and Asian calligraphic script. The cultural imagery is symbolic of the visual cues that evoke racist constructs of anti-blackness and the Asian minority model in western cultures. The two segments in each of the black-Asian characters take effect on one another when combined, and as a result, the existing meanings are transformed to represent letters in the alphabet, thus demonstrating a disruption of the constructed meanings associated with race.\nThe coin represents the drive for wealth and power that motivate the constructions of racial biases and discrimination as mechanisms to divide groups of people and maintain societal inequalities. It bears the black-Asian cipher on one side, and on the other, is a message to be deciphered.\nMore information on the black-Asian code can be found here http://rujunkopugh.com/A-Blue-Skies-Conversation.\nShapeways Collection: First collectors of this work will receive a corresponding 3D print from Shapeways. Within two weeks of the sale closing, Feral File will contact collectors to input their name, email address, and shipping information to provide to Shapeways for fulfillment. Shipping and printing costs are included in the price of the work. Note that all orders will take 6-8 weeks to deliver. After initial collection, NFTs can continue to be collected on the secondary market without the 3D printed component.\nThe coins are printed in wax and then cast in bronze with a natural finish, with a size of approximately 4.8cm x 4.8cm x 0.2cm"

"text": "Laleh Mehran was born in Iran and relocated with her family to the United States at the start of the Iranian Islamic Revolution. Mehran creates elaborate environments in digital and physical spaces focused on the complex intersections between politics, belief systems, and science. In a political climate in which certain views are increasingly suspect and can have extreme consequences, Mehran’s artworks are invitations to think again about each of these paradigms and the profound connections that bind them. Mehran received her MFA from Carnegie Mellon University. Her work has been shown individually and collaboratively across the U.S. and international venues including the ISEA (United Arab Emirates), National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (Taiwan), FILE (Brazil), ACT Festival (South Korea), MASS MoCA (Massachusetts), Mattress Factory Museum (Pennsylvania), Carnegie Museum of Art (Pennsylvania), The Georgia Museum of Art (Georgia), The Andy Warhol Museum (Pennsylvania), Denver Art Museum (Colorado), Biennial of the Americas at MCA Denver (Colorado), 404 International Festival of Art & Technology (Argentina), European Media Arts Festival (Germany), Boulder MCA (Colorado), and Currents: The Santa Fe International New Media Festival (New Mexico). Mehran is a professor of emergent digital practices at the University of Denver."

"description": "From her childhood memories of the fabled Huma bird common in Iran to her fascination in the legends of the hummingbird native to the Americas, Laleh Mehran has found commonalities in the reverence and might attributed to these two birds. The legends say that the Huma bird exists above the planet and never touches the ground. The creature is a common motif in Persian, Ottoman Turkish, and Urdu poetry traditions. In Sufi traditional stories, even catching a glimpse of the shadow of the creature would make one happy for a lifetime. Across the Americas, the very real hummingbird inspires legends disproportionate to its physical scale. The themes span from associations with the Aztec god of the sun, war, and human sacrifice to the Mojave creation myth that people lived underground until the hummingbird came to them and led them out into the light.\nMehran’s work, often modeled on historical research transformed into metaphors and symbolism, addresses contemporary socio-political landscapes. The title for this work, “Aequitas,” is derived from the Latin concept of justice and equality. As encroaching fanaticism furthers inequities, intersectional solidarity of action is required to create hope for more ethical collective futures. Mehran’s project, much like the Huma bird, is meant to inspire our internal and collective powers to make changes — from the smallest ripple to a tsunami.\nThe “Aequitas” form references the back-to-back Huma bird sculptures found in Persepolis, Iran, but in this sculpture, it is hummingbirds merging into a new unified creature. The form is repeated in a ring, wings interlocked to create a powerful presence ready for ongoing action in our complex world.\nDerived from “Hummingbird Ornament” by louisesr71 licensed under CC BY.\nShapeways Collection: First collectors of this work will receive a corresponding 3D print from Shapeways. "summary": "In 1995, I was in a relationship with a woman from Singapore who lived in Australia. I would wake/stay up for our 3 a.m. chats, all over IRC via 28K baud modem. I came to realize that the self I was sharing with someone on the other side of the world was perhaps one of the emotionally truest versions of who I was. At the time I didn’t understand how to share my deepest thoughts and dreams with the people I lived with, or those I considered my best friends. Yet in this world of simple text and private virtual rooms, I was more fully “real.”",
