"description": "Data Pilgrims is a series of artworks by Emi Kusano that explores mythological pilgrimages through digital spaces, created in collaboration with AI.\nHuman societies have always bonded through shared stories and collective fictions. The imaginary frameworks of myths, religions, and social norms— have enabled us to cooperate on a massive scale. But today, the abundance of information threatens to overwhelm rather than unite us. In Data Pilgrims, Kusano visualizes this tension by drawing on motifs from Japanese mythology—including spirits (kami), yokai, drifting souls, and anonymous crowds—reimagined through a contemporary take on traditional ukiyo-e aesthetics.\nThe works are created through repeated cycles of AI image regeneration and recombination, which cause the images to \"hallucinate\"—distorting original meanings and generating entirely new visual realities. By revealing this iterative and transformative process, the series highlights both the creative potential and the existential risks of artificial intelligence. Information, depending on how it is used, can either illuminate or mislead, clarify or confuse.\nAnonymous pilgrims traverse these virtual landscapes, stepping into the fragile yet sacred domain of the glitch—where prayers become data, souls are archived, and faith itself is rewritten by algorithms.",

"description": "In Angelcores & Heavenly Sprites, Sabato Visconti uses glitch and ROM-corruption processes to reveal the angelic aspects of early console games, specifically third- and fourth-generation 8-bit and 16-bit consoles like the NES, Super Nintendo, and Sega Genesis.\nWhile much of our visual understanding of angels derives from Medieval European Christianity and after, the history of the angelic has evolved in a constant renegotiation as cultures and power structures change. The contemporary meme of \"Biblically-Accurate Angels\" reflects this broader understanding of the angelic, although a theologian may quietly point out that the Ophanim described in the book of Ezekiel wasn't classified as an Angel until much later in history. In the same spirit, depictions of angels in 1980-1990s video games were diverse and ludopoetic—designed to fit the game type, whether it was an action platformer, a shoot 'em up, or an RPG. Games like ActRaiser, ActRaiser II, Wings of Wor, Spiritual Warfare, Chubby Cherub, and Legendary Wings draw from a variety of historical influences and portray the angelic as powerful warriors, childlike cuties, winged creatures, or devotional objects. The glitch artefacts and looping GIF narratives serve to lift up these figures from the repetitive toil and routine mechanics of their medium.",

"description": "Uxkme (which means “old woman” in Téenek) is part of Omoiyari, a collaborative artwork made by the artist collective Keiken and Gabriel Massan. First displayed around the busy streets of Soho in Central London at The Photographers Gallery (2022), the posters in this series encouraged passers-by to explore a speculative world by encountering some of its inhabitants.\nOmoiyari translates as compassion in Japanese. Each poster in the series features a slogan in the style of an advert. When positioned in busy, retail-driven areas, these expressions of love, tenderness, and infinite possibility inspire us to challenge and expand the pre-existing structures and limitations of our reality. They subvert the idea that adverts sell desires, and instead examine the depths and complexities of being a spirit within a body.\nIn this work, Uxkme—a fragile avatar trapped in the thick gel of time—struggles to remember themselves while maintaining the muscle memory of their spirit. To practice compassion, one must be a student of the invisible.",
